Deconstructing the Status Quo
By: Alyson Grant
Deconstructing the Status Quo takes inspiration from sexualized fashion and media photography and deconstructs and recreates something new that is de-sexualized, modest, and respectful of those such as women and the LGBTQ+ community who are usually greatly objectified to sell fashion products and movies. The idea is by changing simple aspects such as lighting, clothing, poses, and composition you can still advertise the same product or convey a similar message without the need for objectification or gender stereotypes. The hope with this set/series of photos is to decolonize the toxic ideas and messaging that have influenced fashion and media for the last few centuries and show other creatives in fashion, media, and entertainment that it is possible to change the narrative in today’s day and age.
